I installed XP a little while ago so I could get Age of Empires 2 working. I think I got everything working.
But like usual, XP overwrote my boot loader, so I coudln’t get back into Linux. Or Vista.
Last night, Jonah wanted to play with the Compiz cube, so I figured I’d throw in an Ubuntu cd and fix my bootloader. But when I did, I couldn’t get grub to see my original boot folder.
Eventually, I tried an Ubuntu Server cd. It has a rescue mode. However, it seems that ‘rescue mode’ is really just code for “get into the installer at whatever portion”. Ie. ‘reinstall Ubuntu’. Only without the effectiveness of actually installing.
I tried reinstalling Grub. Instead, I ended up wiping out my boot folder altogether, taking the kernel and the meu, and all the other files I needed to boot with it.
So my Ubuntu install is pretty well borked. And it overwrote the XP bootloader, so now I just get ‘cannot find operationg system’. Gah.
Tonight, I’m going to try to fix the XP bootloader first, then reinstall Ubuntu. I probably needed to do so anyway to get my partitions in order, assuming I was going to blow Vista out. That’ll still leave me with plenty of space for a triple boot at some point.
I’m looking at dynebolic, although it seems to be designed to be a live cd only. I couldn’t get Transmission to boot the other day.
It’s too bad the kernel doesn’t love my wireless card (although being plugged into the router makes things eaiser when installing regularly, anyways) — doing a LAN install or an internet install sounds like it’d save me a lot of hassle. PXE, tftp, and all that.
